The origin of radio haloes and non-thermal emission in clusters of galaxies

چکیده
We study the origin of the non-thermal emission from the intracluster medium, including the excess hard X-ray emission and cluster-wide radio haloes, through fitting two representative models to the Coma cluster. If the synchrotron emitting relativistic electrons are accelerated in situ from the vast pool of thermal electrons, then a quasi-stationary solution of the kinetic equation with particle acceleration through turbulence at high energies (> 200 keV) naturally produces a population of supra-thermal electrons responsible for the excess hard X-ray emission through bremsstrahlung. Inverse Compton scattering is negligible at hard X-ray energies in this case. The radio halo flux density constrains the magnetic field strength to a value close to that of equipartition ∼ 1μG. Alternatively, if the relativistic electrons are injected from numerous localised ‘external’ sources then the hard X-rays are best explained by inverse Compton scattering from GeV electrons, and little of the hard X-radiation has a bremsstrahlung origin. In this case, the magnetic field strength is constrained to ∼ 0.1− 0.2μG. Both models assume that the non-thermal emissions are generated by a single electron spectrum, so that only two free parameters, well constrained by the observed hard X-ray and radio halo spectra, are needed in either case. Measurements of the cluster magnetic field will distinguish between the models.

Non thermal emission in lusters of galaxies
I briefly review our current knowledge of the non thermal emission from galaxy clusters and discuss future prospect with Simbol-X. Simbol-X will map the hard X–ray emission in clusters, determine its origin and disentangle the thermal and non-thermal components. Correlated with radio observations, the observation of the non-thermal X-ray emission, when confirmed, will allow to map both the magn...
متن کاملTheoretical Implications of Diffuse Non-Thermal Emission from Clusters of Galaxies
A short review on theoretical implications of non-thermal emission (radio, extreme ultraviolet, high energy X-ray) from the intracluster medium is given. The origin of cluster radio halos and cluster radio relics is discussed within the framework of a network of processes producing a non-thermal electron population. Emphasis is given to the role of old, remnant, presently invisible relativistic...
متن کاملAGN Zoo and Classications of Active Galaxies
We review the variety of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) classes (so-calledAGN zoo") and classification schemes of galaxies by activity types based on their optical emission-line spectrum, as well as other parameters and other than optical wave-length ranges. A historical overview of discoveries of various types of active galaxies is given, including Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, QSOs, BL Lace...
متن کاملObservation of Radio Galaxies and Clusters of Galaxies with VERITAS
Radio galaxies are the only non-blazar extragalactic objects detected in the VHE (E > 100 GeV) band. These objects enable the investigation of the main substructures of the AGN, in particular the core, the jet and its interaction with the intergalactic environment. Clusters of galaxies, instead, have not been detected by γ-ray observatories. These objects are collections of up to thousands of g...
متن کاملCosmic Rays, Radio Halos and Non-Thermal X-ray Emission in Clusters of Galaxies
We calculate the flux of radio, hard X-ray and UV radiation from clusters of galaxies as produced by synchrotron emission and Inverse Compton Scattering of electrons generated as secondaries in cosmic ray interactions in the intracluster medium. Both the spatial distribution of cosmic rays due to their diffusion and the spatial distribution of the intracluster gas are taken into account. Our ca...
